A large body of research has indicated that individuals with intellectual deficits experience difficulties across multiple life domains, which may extend into parenting of their children. The purpose of this study was to examine the educational expectations, aspirations, and midlife educational preferences for children held by parents with mild intellectual deficits (MID), as well as the educational attainment of those children, compared with parents with typical intellectual functioning (TIF). This study utilized data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, which were collected across a span of 50 years (1957-2007). Regression procedures were used to examine (a) differences between parents with MID and TIF in their educational expectations and aspirations for children and their children's educational attainment; (b) the extent to which parent characteristics, such as occupational status and marital status, influence educational expectations and aspirations for children and children's educational attainment; and, (c) the extent to which educational expectations, aspirations, and midlife preferences predict children's educational attainment among parents with MID versus TIF. These findings demonstrated that even after controlling for potentially confounding variables, parents with MID have lower educational aspirations, expectations, midlife preferences, and their children have lower educational attainment than parents with TIF. Moreover, after controlling for numerous potentially confounding variables and parent ability group (MID vs. TIF), parents' educational aspirations and expectations predict their children's educational attainment.
